Creative responses to Social innovations

"Facing the World"

is a creative piece I made in Adobe Illustrator that reflects the environment we all lived in for the past two years (2020-2022).

The ongoing pandemic has compelled us to spend an unprecedented amount of time glued to our screens. Our desire to step outside and explore the world has been replaced by watching movies, videos, and photos online. Leaving our homes now feels like venturing into a forbidden territory where violence, diseases, inequality, global warming, and pollution still exist. Moreover, the rise in Asian hate crimes since the onset of the pandemic has made me more fearful of stepping out. I now go out less often as I am afraid of becoming a victim myself. As a result, I cannot even take a short walk after a long day at work without feeling unsafe. Stuck at home... Stuck in my bedroom...

"What I eat in a week, month, and year"

illustration was created in Adobe Illustrator.

This is a description of my pescatarian diet which mostly includes seafood, nuts, fruits, and vegetables. It reminds me of how grateful I am to have grown up in a generous household where the fridge was always full, and the table was filled with nourishing meals every day. However, I have also included three small side dishes in my depiction: micro-plastics, iron pills, and supplements, as well as a bottle of water. The reason why I added microplastics is to highlight the issue of ocean pollution and how it affects our food chain. Studies have shown that plastic residue is present in shrimp and other seafood that we consume. It is important to bring awareness to the severity of pollution across the globe. Moreover, I take iron pills and supplements daily to manage my anemia and maintain good health. Finally, water is an essential ingredient that we often forget to consume. Hydration is crucial! So, please take a moment to hydrate yourselves!

"This is not enough..."

was made with Adobe Illustrator.

I was inspired to create this piece by my daily habits of managing waste. I always throw away organic waste in the compost bin and try to recycle any recyclable materials. Recently, I've also made a conscious effort to reduce impulsive purchases, whether they are clothing or electronic gadgets. Instead, I wait for a few months to a year before making a decision, considering the long-term impact of my choices. I believe there is always room for improvement in reducing my carbon footprint. I learned from watching YouTube videos that the use of electronic devices and the internet excessively is also a form of pollution. This is because most of our electronic parts are non-renewable resources. While some corporations have implemented new and innovative ways to reduce their energy usage, it is not enough to compensate for all the damage inflicted on the earth. With the increase in forest fires, plastic pollution in oceans, and overproduction of textiles, the global climate crisis seems never-ending.

"We Changed"

was made with Adobe Illustrator.

Over the past two years, we became a sociaty that feared climate change, overconsumption and many other issues. Now not only are we worried about catching COVID19, we're trying to find alternative lifestyle that is more sustainable in the long run. However, nothing has really changed except the fact that we are more aware of our surroundings. I also wish I could go out and walk more often, but Covid made me stay home a lot more often than I would've wanted. I took this time to take a step back and reflect about my future career, and received a remote internship in the middle of pandemic.
